A selection of fascinating books by modern American writers

American literature is a treasure trove of interesting topics that question society's moral compass. Today's selection includes five novels published at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, which are read with gusto.

1) Delia Owens "Where the Crayfish Sing"

The main character of the novel "Where the Crayfish Sing" grew up as a hermit in the swamps from an early age, which did not prevent her from becoming a truly intelligent person and even meeting true love. Why did the girl appear in court as a defendant in a serious crime? And who really did it? The author keeps readers in the dark until the end of the book, which, thanks to the interesting plot, is read in one breath.

Meanwhile, writing is not Delia Owens' main activity. She is a successful zoologist and has lived in Africa for more than twenty years, studying animal behavior in the wild.

2) Fanny Flagg "Fried Green Tomatoes in the Café "Half-Station""

Evelyn, the heroine of the novel by Fannie Flag published in 1987, is going through an age crisis. While visiting her mother-in-law in a nursing home, she meets an elderly woman named Ninny, who shares with Evelyn stories about a town called Half-Station. Its inhabitants have difficult lives, but cohesion and love of life help them cope with adversity. In the person of Ninny, Evelyn finds a friend, and her stories allow the woman to rethink her own life.

3) Celeste Ing "Fires Everywhere"

Celeste Ing's second novel, Fires Everywhere, is widely known for the miniseries of the same name released in 2020. In the center of the plot are two families from different social strata. The respectable Richardsons seem to be an example to follow, while the artist Mia, who is raising a daughter named Pearl alone, evokes mixed feelings. The life path of two mothers and their opposition is the basis of this exciting novel.

4) Anne Patchett "Premonition of a Miracle"

Marina is a biologist and doctor. The life of one of her colleagues ended unexpectedly and under rather strange circumstances. To understand what happened to him, the woman goes to Brazil. There, in the Amazon jungle, you can find not only the answer to this question, but also a drug for infertility, which has unprecedented effectiveness. In addition to interesting plot twists, the book gives food for thought about how expedient the desire of modern people to outwit nature is.

5) Gillian Flynn "Sharp Objects"

Gillian Flynn's debut novel became popular in different countries and was even filmed by HBO. A journalist named Camilla is sent on a business trip: a girl has disappeared in one of the American towns, and the heroine must make reports from the scene. This trip turns out to be special for the young woman, because the disappearance took place in her hometown, where Camilla's family lives to this day. Trying to figure it out, the heroine begins to unravel the tangled tangle of provincial life, the threads of which lead her to unexpected discoveries...
